March 2, 2023

There are many types of attractions that bring tourists to top travel hubs every year; from nature reserves to festivities there is a hobby for everyone. However, one of the more universal draw-points for globetrotters is the power of architecture. Buildings are designed to meet human needs and create an experience rather than simply foster shelter. That being said, the following is a list of the most incredible architectural designs from around the world that you will not want to miss.

The Artistic Guggenheim

Established in October.21 1959, the Guggenheim is one of the most architecturally prominent buildings, not only in New York City but in the world. With a low entrance that gives the impression of a crowded space, the building then leads to a grand opening that supports the feeling of possibility and an ingenious format for viewing the art within. A design which ushers visitors immediately to the top and then guides them down a continuous ramp at a gentle angle, fostering one ceaseless exposure to some of the earth’s best artwork. Named after Solomon R. Guggenheim in a design by Frank Lloyd Wright, this structure will go down in history.

With such a significance in the world of art, it can be challenging to try and find a structure that is more influential than the Guggenheim. However, the next slide is pretty close.

St. Basils Beautiful Cathedral

Russia is home to the next architectural masterpiece on the list, St. Basil’s Cathedral in the Red Square. Built rebuilt in 1860, and unchanged since the architectural prowess of this site is unparalleled and hosts unique shapes and colors that make for a vibrant unit. Originally built by Ivan the Terrible, it was intended to commemorate the capture of Kazan and is now a museum. As a tribute to the impressive historical significance and exterior imagery, the site was listed in 1990 as a heritage site for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Tourists will be amazed by the beauty of Russia’s prized possession.

Now that you know about Russia's masterpiece, the next slide will be a world-renowned structure located in Dubai.

The Towering Burj Khalifa

The Burj Khalifa is next up and is currently one of the most impressive buildings in the world, both in design and in height. Stretching impressive feet of eight-hundred-twenty-eight meters, it is currently the tallest building on earth with one-hundred-six stories. As the largest freestanding construction across the globe, Dubai is a proud host of such a tourist magnet with bringing countless visitors on an annual basis to marvel under this impressive piece of work construction started back in 2004 and finishing approximately five years later in 2009. Architecturally speaking the Burj uses a tube design which allows such a tall structure to use much less steel than usual, a concept used on the infamous Willis Tower; design for the Khalifa was managed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill (SOM) well known for other projects in New York City, such as the One World Trade Center.

Beating the tallest building in the world is a tough task. However, the following slide is one of the most amazing spectacles, not in height but value.

His Holinesses Sistine Chapel

Known as a religious pinnacle of the Catholic church, the Sistine Chapel is, by far, on the most valuable places for Catholics across the globe. Constructed with renaissance architecture, visitors are sure to experience the rich history of this gem in Vatican City. Interestingly, the Sistine Chapel was designed specifically without doorways such that the entrance would come only from the papal palace. With a rectangular structure, there is much to marvel at inside including the infamous ceiling painting by Michelangelo, which portrays three themes; God's creation of the world, God's relationship with mankind, and mankind’s fall from grace.

With such a spiritual influence on the world, the Sistine Chapel is a perfect segway for the next building on the list.

The Romantic Eiffel Tower

Known as a place of romance and possibility, Paris France is the origin of the Eiffel Tower, next up on this list. Built with wrought iron lattice, a tower structure developed by architect Gustave Eiffel - main lead on the project - reveals the simplistic beauty of France’s dearest possession. Construction took place from 1887 to 1889 and has turned into a world-renowned sight, which currently holds a title as the most visited paid monument in the world with approximately seven-million per year. With a height of about three-hundred-twenty-four meters, the Eiffel Tower is currently the tallest building in Paris, France.

Everyone knows about the Eiffel Tower and its beauty, but this next design, although less popular is just as marvelous to see.

Bold and Beautiful Chateau Frontenac

Located in Quebec City, Canada, the next architecturally stunning work is the Chateau Frontenac, an unmistakable building that acts as one of the country’s grand railway hotels. Eighteen floors make for over six-hundred rooms, a guests paradise, that overlooks the skyline. Chateau Frontenac has been around since the 17th century and is home to much history; notable guests throughout the ages including Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt who marveled at the true work of art. Originally constructed by the Canadian Pacific Railway, the structure was designed to accommodate travelers in a luxurious center. Those looking to for top architectural landmarks would do well to travel to the palace of the north.

With the northern icon now on your list, the upcoming slide will feature one of the most important buildings in American politics.

The Iconic White House

Next on the docket is one of the most modest, yet powerful buildings in the world, the White House. Home and workplace of every President of the United States, the iconic building has hosted world leaders since John Adams and continues to be a great worldly attraction, located in Washington, D.C. Originally constructed by architect James Hoban, the structure features a cross between Palladian and Neoclassical architecture. Many additions and changes have been made to the layout over the years, including but not limited to the expansion of the West Wing and implementation of the Oval Office, each reestablishing the impressive and formidable design of this American treasure.

Now that you have read more about the White House, the following slide is interestingly nick-named after a type of pickle and for a good reason.

Quirky, Yet Cool: The Gherkin

Commonly referred to as ‘the most civilized skyscraper in the world’, the next impressive piece of architecture is The Gherkin in London, England. Opening in 2004, within London’s financial district, the building is approximately one-hundred-eighty meters tall and maintains an interesting curve appeal. Standing on the location of the former Baltic Exchange Building, architect Norman Foster was able to achieve a more modern look which is comprised of a stretched figure covered with glass panels. Many of tourists enjoy traveling to see the bold statement that the Gherkin makes amongst more reserved structures in the city. Incredibly well designed, energy efficient features such as smart filters and passive heat glass were included to ensure environmental responsibility.

The following building is one that has had its troubles in the past but is still a force to be reckoned with in the world of architecture.

The Troubled Cologne Cathedral

Located in Cologne, Germany, the Cologne Cathedral is a strong and impressive feat of architecture. Construction started back in 1248 but was halted which left the building unfinished until 1880. Although known around the globe for its great size and spires, the building has had many troubles in its history. During WWII, the cathedral was hit by multiple bombings, which did considerable damage to the city and building. Construction is a common occurrence here. However, the building is nonetheless iconic for its architectural design and character. Tourists will be sure to learn much history and enjoy the true struggle this great gem has been through which landed it on the list of UNESCO.

Upcoming is the last but not least architectural wonder that is a symbol of hope and perseverance in the face of adversity, especially for Americans.

One World Trade Center

Last but not least is the One World Trade Center. Now one of the tallest buildings in the world, this structure is part of the World Trade Center complex that was rebuilt after the horrific terrorist attack that took place on September 11th, 2001. Architect David Childs, a member to the same firm which built the Burj Khalifa, drew a beautiful design which captures the essence of its predecessor. Since opening in 2014, millions have traveled to New York City to see the inspiration and hope that One World Trade Center brings to its country. Another common tourist attraction while visiting is the memorial for September 11th which was constructed at ground zero and represents the strength of America, especially in its hardest hour.
